Start Blogging with Squarespace

I talk about Squarespace a lot. I talk about it so much, it's one of my dedicated blog categories. But, I haven't covered the topic of blogging yet. Today, I want to change that.

If you've been to my website before, you've probably noticed I blog pretty frequently. I love blogging for a few reasons. One, it generates great SEO for my website. Two, it positions me as an expert in my field. Lastly, it helps me provide content for my audience, for free. Which is really important to me.

Luckily, Squarespace makes blogging really simple. But, if you are concerned about jumping in blind, branding your blog or you just need a little motivation. This post has you covered.

Adding a blog

Squarespace makes adding a blog really simple. With just a few quick steps you can have a blog up and running in no time. Follow the steps below, to get started!

Step One: Open the back-end of your website and navigate to the Pages section of your website.

Step Two: Under the Not Linked section of your menu Select the "+" sign. A pop-up will appear, as shown below, select the Blog.

Step Three: You'll return to the menu where "New Blog" will appear. Name your blog and select it in the menu to navigate to your new Blog page.

Step Four: Select the gear icon in the upper right hand corner to configure your blog settings.

In the pop-up window you can configure your basic settings, such as: Navigation Title, Page Title, Description and the Posts per Page and more.

To get started, it's most important to focus on the Navigation Title, Page Title, Description and URL.

  1. The Navigation Title changes how your blog will display in your Menu
  2. The Page Title changes how your blog will display in the browser window.
  3. The Description is how you can add keyword-rich content to improve your Squarespace SEO
  4. Lastly, the URL is the URL. Crazy, huh?

Note: I don't recommend leaving your blog in the Not Linked section of your menu. But, while you're working to perfect your blog, feel free to keep it there until you're ready to launch. Once you're ready, just drag and drop your Blog into your Main Navigation.

Adding a post

Now, it's time to add your first post!

Step One: Navigate to your new blog and press the "+" icon in the upper right hand corner to add your first blog post.

Step Two: A pop-up window will appear where you can add your blog post Title and Content, choose or create Categories and Tags and Schedule, Save or Publish your post.

You can also format your blog post here, with headings, subheadings, links, quotes, graphics and more.

Under the Social tab you can push automatic posts to your connected accounts. You can customize what each post says and it will be posted once you publish your blog post.

Note: You can not add Instagram posts from your Squarespace blog from the Social Settings.

Adding related posts

In Squarespace you have to manually add the summary block to each blog post in order for related posts to appear. Although, this sounds like a hassle, Squarespace Summary Blocks give you the freedom to highlight posts by category and tags to enhance your readers experience. Plus, adding related posts is easier than you might think!

Step One: Click an insert spot to add the Summary Block to the bottom of your blog post. Next, Select the Carousel Summary Block to begin

Step Four: Select the Display tab to further customize your "Related Posts."

Customizing your sidebar

Before we get started, it's important to note that not every blog has a sidebar. Use the Blog Features by Template from Squarespace to check if your template includes a sidebar.

Once you've confirmed your blog has a sidebar, we need to enable your sidebar.

Navigate to Design > Style Editor. Scroll down to the Blog section and edit the Enable Blog Sidebar section.

Now, let's customize your sidebar

Step One: Navigate to Pages > Blog

Step Two: Hover over your Sidebar and select Edit.

Step Three: Now, you can begin editing your sidebar. Your blog sidebar is designed like any Squarespace page, where you can edit using your Blocks.

However, I recommend considering a few of these options for a successful blog sidebar.

  • Introduction Section
  • Social Media Links
  • Highlight Popular Content
  • Newsletter Opt-In
  • Minimal to No Ads, Please
