You may be surprised to hear this, but I don’t believe every single business owner needs a custom brand. In fact, I consider it negligible for many business owners to invest a custom brand from the beginning.
As a business owner myself, I understand how crucial it is to prioritize the profits of your business. When you are first getting started, it doesn’t make sense to invest thousands of dollars into a business when you have zero proof of concept.
So, if you’ve been on the fence about investing in a brand designer or purchasing a pre-made brand kit, this post is for you!
The Benefits of Pre-Made Branding
There are a lot of benefits to purchasing a pre-made brand or logo kit. I have offered pre-made branding before and have considered offering it again in the future.
Before I just into some of the benefits of pre-made branding, let me explain what pre-made branding is.
A pre-made brand is a fully designed brand that can be customized to fit your specific business needs. Typically, you select a pre-made brand kit from a small selection and then the designer of that kit will customize your colors, business name and any other elements that require updating.
What are the benefits of pre-made branding?:
A pre-made brand kit is obviously a budget-friendly route. Pre-made branding can range anywhere between $10 and $10,000. As always, you get what you pay for, so be intentional about where you put your money.
A pre-made brand offers you a professional design, ensuring your brand has a more professional and curated style than a non-designer may be able to make on their own.
Lastly, investing in a pre-made brand is going to save you a lot of time if you are trying to DIY your brand on your own.
Before we move onto the benefits of custom branding, I want to note that not all pre-made branding kits were made equally. So, I want to help you look for a quality pre-made brand that will give you the highest return-on-investment (ROI).
What Qualifies As a Good Pre-Made Brand?
It shouldn’t be too inexpensive. If it closer to the $10 mark, you are likely to be working with a designer that isn’t experienced or has minimal skills or strategy. It’s also likely the kit doesn’t have have a number of sale limit.
You want to find a pre-made brand that is only being offered to a minimal number of people to ensure you aren’t purchasing a logo that 700+ other people already have.
I want to note, look for a sale limit not a sale window. A sale limit, limits the number of times one product can be sold. A sales window limits the amount of time one product will be available for sale.
When you’re looking for a pre-made brand, I recommend one that states it will only be sold X number of times. If it is available for 3 months, for instance, any number of people could purchase the exact same logo with no limitations put in place.
Another thing to look for is a complete branding kit. You don’t want to just buy a logo. You want to look for a color palette, font system and additional design elements such as an inspiration board, pattern design, icons, etc.
When is pre-made branding appropriate?
If you are just getting started launching your business, I think pre-made branding can be appropriate. This will obviously depend on the type of business and financial backing your are launching your business with. For instance, a brick-and-mortar store will always require custom branding but a blog may not.
If you have no proof of concept, I recommend launching your business with pre-made branding. Don’t invest in a concept before knowing if you are going to earn any money.
If you have not begun making a substantial income from your business, I recommend using pre-made branding. I don’t recommend going into debt in order to appear professional. Work on the inside of your business, before perfecting the outside.
Ready to Create a One-Of-A-Kind Brand?
You can’t just design a logo and call it a day. If you want your brand to be professional, memorable, and effective, you have to be intentional. But that is one tall order, huh?
The Benefits of Custom Branding
As a brand designer, I obviously see a laundry list of benefits that a custom brand can provide.
If you think your business is a little advanced for a pre-made brand, you may want to consider a strategic custom brand design.
When you work with a custom brand designer, you will walk away with a strategic brand design. A strategic brand can’t be understated. The value of understanding and creating a brand that drives your business forward is beyond valuable.
A custom brand can also speak directly to your ideal audience and turn away anyone that doesn’t fall into that category. The power of speaking only to your ideal audience means you can grow your business, profits and community all thanks to your brand.
When you work with a designer one-on-one you can walk away knowing that your brand is 100% unique to your business and created with only your business in mind.
Lastly, when you invest in your brand you are investing in the sustainability of your business. This can seem like a daunting investment, but a custom brand is so valuable you are guaranteed to earn that investment back.
What Qualifies A Good Brand Designer?
This part is a little tough for me to write about, as I am a brand designer and have a lot of opinions about this topic. But, I’m going to keep it to just three top qualifiers you should look for.
First, you’ll want to work with a brand designer who values the strategy behind branding. That means they are dedicated to your overall brand and mission, not just quick cash for a simple logo.
Second, you’ll want to hire a brand designer that has some form of social proof. Have they worked with real clients, do they have positive testimonials, do they keep a relationship with past clients? All of these are proof that your brand designer is not only of high-quality, but they value the experience and opinion of their clients.
Lastly, the type of design work they do resonates with you and your brand. This can’t be understated as there are so many different types of designers and totally different aesthetics that accompany it. Be sure you are hiring a designer that is inline your market or aesthetic.
When is custom branding appropriate?
If you have a thriving community and business, it is time to invest in a strategic and cohesive brand experience.
If your business, of any size, requires a strategic brand approach I recommend working with a strategy-driven professional brand designer.
If you are able to make an investment, invest in yourself and your brand. If you’re not betting on you, who will?
The benefits of pre-made branding:
Cohesive and curated
The benefits of custom branding:
Strategic to your business and offer
Your brand will attract only your ideal audience.
Your brand will be one-of-a-kind.
An investment that is proven to drive profits.
No matter what type of branding you choose, making a strategic decision for your business is always the best call you can make.
