Iโ€™ve talked a lot about my design process in the past.

Iโ€™ve covered how I onboard clients and offboard clients. Iโ€™ve written about my client process and daily routine. Iโ€™ve even covered making the switch to the one concept approach.

But, Iโ€™ve never really shared a true behind-the-scenes of my process. By that I mean; the messy, unedited and disorganized path I take when designing for a client.

So, letโ€™s rip off the band-aid and hop right in.

Until recently, my clients were always involved in creating the inspiration board for their brand.

It made sense, in theory, that they would be able to share the visual direction they see for their brand and I would be able to curate it to perfection.

In reality, my clients come to me because they arenโ€™t sure the right visual direction for their brand, they donโ€™t have the time to design their own brand and they donโ€™t have the background knowledge to assist me in a meaningful way.

This reality led me to make a change in my design process - cutting my clients out of the inspiration board (also known as mood boards) altogether.

The Kikulu Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on global education.

The word Kikulu means "It's Important" in Lusoga, a regional dialect in Uganda. The Kikulu foundation believes the most valuable practice in creating lasting change is by investing in people.
